Recreating Skid Row: AI Visuals for Kathryn Taylor Smith’s Immersive Theater

When Kathryn Taylor Smith took the stage for A Mile in My Shoes, audiences weren’t just watching a performance—they were stepping into the stories of Skid Row, the fashion stores of a bygone era, and imagined neighborhoods.

This immersive experience was made possible by ThinkDiffusion's Studio, which brought to life visually stunning AI-generated backdrops for this consciousness-raising theatrical performance.

ThinkDiffusion was tasked with turning storyboard sketches into photorealistic animations that would set the stage for her performance. Each frame was meticulously crafted, not only capturing the aesthetic of the era but also amplifying the emotional depth of the narrative.

From fictional neighborhoods to a recreated Skid Row in Los Angeles, these visuals allowed the audience to “travel” with Smith, experiencing the lives of her characters firsthand.

We even modeled Smith’s own face to integrate her seamlessly into the animated visuals, which was especially important for a key scene featured an imagined time where Smith’s character undergoes a makeover.

This innovative use of AI blurred the line between performance and backdrop, deepening the audience’s connection to the story.

The digital screens on stage brought a higher level of immersion - combining photorealistic imagery with storytelling ensured that the visuals were integral to the performance, helping to convey the struggles, dreams, and humanity of Los Angeles’ homeless community.

Through A Mile in My Shoes, Kathryn Taylor Smith and ThinkDiffusion demonstrated the power of storytelling enhanced by technology. The result was a performance that not only entertained but also challenged perceptions, making the invisible visible for all to see.
